In a surprising move, Disney announced today that starting on 9/23/21, Disney will "pause" the virtual queue for Rise of the Resistance and you can use a traditional standby queue to ride it.

It is an interesting move, I thought that by now most of the kinks with the virtual queue had been worked out and it was working relatively well although I know some people still said they were unable to get a boarding group - so this will help them I guess.
I wonder if this has to do with Genie+ and Ratatouille both launching soon and both having 7am activities (virtual queue for Ratatouille and for Genie it is Lightning Lane Individual attraction passes). Maybe Disney is thinking their IT systems can't handle all 3, so the solution is to have RoTR go to a standby queue for now?
Personally I hope the virtual queue comes back for RoTR. I really liked it and was able to get it pretty much every single time. Now I suspect standby lines for RoTR will easily exceed 4 hours long.

Re: Rise of the Resistance in Hollywood Studios ends Virtual Queue
Star Wars Rise of Resistance will change likely to WDW lightning lane/standby queue. The ride opened in 2019.
Its now considered old and Disneyland is expected to make the change over to with WDW.
The ride will be open during the outdoor tiny refurbishment of new signage and lane queue changes.
It will be normal standby queue until (Rumored Likely) October 1, 2021.

I think Cory made a good point on his after-stream stream the other night. They have to take something away (“free” virtual queue) before they can start charging for it. With Lightning Lane, you’ll have a virtual queue -it’ll just cost you, now. I forgot what number was said to be floating out there, but seems like something close to $15+ per person for RotR. So, what’s your time worth? For a family of 4, $60(or more) or 4 hours of waiting in line.
Business-wise, and as a Disney investor, I say this is a good move. The Disney fan in me says this is awful and a complete show of greed on upper management’s part as we stray even further away from Walt. I only hope that the added income will translate to my stocks enough to pay for it myself the next time I go.
Also, another thought, is the new rope drop rush for EVERYONE to want to go to Rise. How many injuries/fights/lawsuits will happen before they realize that this is perhaps a bad idea. Just bring back in-park fast pass kiosks to help distribute people throughout the park throughout the day and minimize crazy wait times.

So what are the options for getting on the ride now?

Standby only, but the wait times haven't been horrible. They were worst the first day, now many times when I look throughout the day, it is 65-75 minutes. That's not bad at all for a marquee ride.
When I was at WDW last week, too, every real wait time was less than posted. Slinky often was half of what was posted. And Paging Mr. Morrow did rise at like 65 min and was only 30.
