This is a good thing. I wonder what will become of masks as more people get vaccinated? The CDC is back and forth as to whether vaccinated people can carry the virus, and they stressed that it’s 95% effective and nobody knows if they will be one of the unlucky 5%. For people who visit WDW at this time, it would be nice to be able to remove a mask at times, but only if it’s safe to do so. At work, I have to wear a mask when I’m walking around but I can take it off when I’m in my own office, and I’m fully vaccinated. It would be tough to wear a mask all day, every day, without a break. I feel for those who have to wear one all the time. I suppose the CDC will eventually eliminate masks when enough people are vaccinated and we reach herd immunity. We never had to wear masks in connection with shots we received as kids because we had herd immunity. I hope the experts will eventually conclude that masks aren’t needed, but only when it’s safe to do so. BTW, I had flu-like symptoms the day after I got the second Pfizer shot, and I also got a delayed reaction about 11 days after the second shot that consists of a bad skin rash that I’m still dealing with a week later. Given my reaction to the shot, I really wouldn’t want to catch the virus.
Yeah I think the truth is, there is a lot they don't know about these vaccines. Normally we spend years studying vaccines before they are considered safe and they have a lot of these answers, but in this case - there just isn't enough information to know.
Hopefully enough of us get vaccinated before a mutation of the virus renders the vaccines useless. A mutation that beats the vaccines could have us returning back to lockdown. Herd immunity will require ~80% of people to get the vaccine to reduce the spread of the virus, we're at less than 20% right now, so a long way to go.
If things keep going well, I could see Disney eventually relaxing the mask rule while outdoors and physically distanced, but still enforced while on indoor rides. I think this is just a small baby step towards a return to normal.
I also think with the CDC's guideline on the virus not spreading easily though surfaces, Disney could really enable certain ride features that were turned off, like queue features that require touching (thinking the Test Track build a car feature as an example).
