Design a “new/old” Future World attraction

Postby DreamFigment » Fri Apr 02, 2021 6:12 pm

While the Magic Kingdom has always featured the delight of fantasy, the original Future World showcased the excitement of the real world. But it’s true that attractions from the 80s might need an update (as much as we loved them). If you were to create a new attraction for Future World in the old style, what would it be? Maybe an omnimover traveling through animatronic scenes of the development of computers? A retheme of Body Wars showing how vaccines work in the body? Bonus points for leaving out any IP. More bonus points for imagineering a whole pavilion with a ride, a theater show or movie, and some hands-on exhibits.

So I’ve been thinking about this, and I keep leaning towards a The Sky pavilion. We have The Sea, we have The Land, but no actual Sky Pavilion. Mission: Space could be a centerpiece or jump off point for it, although let’s be honest, just turn it back to Horizons...but when life gives you lemons...

As far as attractions, I’d like to see a Timekeeper meets planetarium meets carousel of progress ride that looks at the history of our knowledge of what’s above us. From animals, to weather, the stars, the gods, and beyond. Host voiced by Jemaine Clement. Narrated by Gary Sinise. We go from our prehistoric ancestors looking towards the sky for rain, then later to the sky for answers to life, just to find more questions and a drive to discover the answers to what it is we’ve stared at for all of time. Sponsored by SpaceX.

Inside the pavilion we have exhibits on the history of flight (natural and man made), modern space exploration and equipment, weather, astronomy meets astrology, aliens (because what if?), and a working telescope.

This is, of course, all just a super rough idea and would probably take a long time to work on specifics and even start creating concept art. I wouldn’t want it to be overly space-focused, which feels like it wants to steer that way, but rather a look at all that is above us.

I really like this idea. Especially the fact that it's more on the educational side -- something that I think is becoming harder to find in Epcot. After reading your post I realize that there really is a wide range of sky-related topics. Very cool!

Yes, this has the spirit! I especially like the idea of the working telescope -- back in the day, they probably would have built the telescope and brought in scientists to use it for some sort of project. Since Florida is associated with the space program, and it's sometimes possible to see rocket launches on property, I think they could do something really neat. Come to think of it, I'm a little surprised Epcot hasn't had a planetarium, if only because Disney gobbles up any ideas that might cause people to leave property (e.g. you can stay at Disney to play miniature golf). I think weather is a great concept too, and again seems very relevant to Florida. And the history of flight might gesture back toward Dreamfllight, since that's now extinct.
