Yes you get a discount. I have gotten emails after booking, like a few days later, that has a link to the MagicBands, then the discount is in there. Not sure if there is a way to secure it without, but I bet if you go through the MyDisney Experience site that it would get you there too.

Yes, it used to be FREE to get a solid color Magic Band when staying on site. However, it is now $5.00 for one, and you can get ones with designs between $10-20. You cannot pick a Magic Band off of the shopDisney site, you need to select from magic bands only available through the My Disney Experience site.

To get your Magic Band:

1. Logon to Disneyworld.com first, then go to the pull down tab that says "My Disney Experience" and pick the option that says "My Magic Bands and Card" OR click this link: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/plan/bands-cards/

2. You should see a list of your Resort Reservations, click on "Get Started" for the reservation you want to purchase Magic Bands for.

3. Select the person you would like to choose a magic band for, then you will get a list of all of the magic bands available for purchase. You can also click the "Grid View" to see all of them on one page.

Hope this helps!

If your trip is still a ways out, keep checking the app, they cycle through the Magic Bands available for resort guests and you'll notice new ones popping up - so a Star Wars one might become available!

You could get one of the $5 bands and then look for magic band "skins" on etsy. They are type of sticker that you can use to customize the band. You might have a lot more options that way also.

I'm assuming you can reuse bands from past trips if you still have them? Please correct if I'm wrong, thanks

Yes, just check in your MDE account that they are there and still active. If they are, you're good to go!

With the "catch" that eventually long-range functions will stop working as MagicBands have an internal battery that can die. This is what enables things like the name signs at the end of Small World, or the rolling ad "posters" near the end of the Everest queue.

Short-range "tap" functionality (park entry, room charging, FastPass when/if that comes back) should keep working indefinitely, however. (At least, until Disney drops MagicBands entirely-- which probably won't happen anytime soon as standard park tickets contain the same short-range tech now.)

I too wish there were more options on MDE for magic bands or that the shopDisney ones could be available for MDE purchase. I'd rather have something more unique for me. I may end up having a friend pick one up for me from the park before we go, even though it won't be discounted.

I've already pre ordered some "lock slides" off Etsy for us even before picking out our bands.

One thing you can do is order a black band (or different color depending on customization) and on Etsy they have some really cool stickers you can add onto a solid colored magic band to make them look really nice.

Just go on Etsy and search for Magic Band skins - some of them are even nicer than the ones you'd buy for a lot more money from Disney. Not sure how well the stickers hold up to normal use like sweat or rain, but they do look cool!
