Split Stay
If my family is staying at one Disney Resort one week and then another Disney Resort the following week does our magic bands need to be adjusted/updated by the second resort front desk so, that we can use them for the second half of our Disney vacation?

Re: Split Stay
If all your family members have both resort reservations hooked up to your My Disney Experience accounts, and your families Magic Bands have been linked to those same accounts, then you are already all set for both resort stays!
You can checkout of your first resort, and then later that day, you'll get an alert in the app/text message with your room number of the next resort. Your magic bands will be ready to unlock that door.

Re: Split Stay
It has been completely seamless when we have done it. Disney if picked up our bags and delivered them to our new room while we were in the parks! I wonder if they are still doing the bag transfer with all the Covid rules right now.

Re: Split Stay
They are still doing bag transfers during COVID, our last 2 trips we did split stays. In October 2020 we did Bay Lake Tower and Boardwalk and our most recent trip in January 2021 we did Bay Lake Tower and Beach Club! We are DVC members, so it is fun to try different DVC resorts
You don't need to actually check out of your first resort. We usually pack everything early in the morning and call Bell Services to come pick up our luggage and tell them we'd like to have them transfer it to the new hotel (you want to do this all on the phone so they bring hotel transfer tags with them). Then we head to the parks! Because we are renting a car, when we arrive at the new resort to park our car, we usually have to stop at the security gate and tell the guard that we're checking into the hotel. They will verify our information and "activate" our magic bands for the parking lot. Other than that - your magic bands should start working on the new room as soon as you are notified it is ready in the Disney World App (aka My Disney Experience or MDE). With Mobile Check-in via the app, we have never needed to visit the front desk to check-in or check-out!
One thing we tend to do is try to stay at a monorail resort for easy access to Magic Kingdom (normally it would be Epcot too but monorail to Epcot is down right now) and then stay at a Skyliner or Crescent Lake resort for easy access to Hollywood Studios and Epcot. Minimizes the travel to each park (except Animal Kingdom) and we can plan our park days around that (although sometimes we do still go to the parks from the further hotel, just so we're not always going to the same park on consecutive days).

Re: Split Stay
Tip: Save the receipt if you buy the refillable mug at your first resort. It should be good for 14 days from date of purchase, so it will be good through the stay at your second resort.
